Over 700 Jefferson County High School students are staging walkouts and protests over proposed changes to the Advanced Placement History curriculum. According to Colorado Public Radio:

Last week, a school board member proposed that advanced placement history classes be required to promote free enterprise and patriotism and be required to avoid classroom materials that encourage social strife or civil disobedience. Two high schools in Jefferson County closed Friday after dozens of teachers called in sick in protest.

According the online petition to be delivered to the School District:

Jeffco Public School Board has just proposed a change of curriculum stating that, “Materials should not encourage or condone civil disorder, social strife or disregard of the law. Instructional materials should present positive aspects of the United States and its heritage.”

This means that important parts of our history such as the Civil Rights Movement, Native American genocide, and slavery will not be taught in public schools. If these important lessons are not taught, children will not learn from them, and what will stop them from happening again? This is a severe form of censorship intended to keep the youth ignorant and easy to manipulate. I’m hoping to get enough signatures to prove that this is a public issue, so, please, if this is important to you, please sign. Do not let our youth grow up in ignorance; we all deserve the truth!

You can sign the petition here.

In honor of Banned Books Week, I read The Miseducation of Cameron Post and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. Both were excellent and I can’t recommend them enough. Kendra is reading Cameron Post now and I told her last night that I was jealous because I wish I was reading it for the first time again.

Now I’m tempted to re-read some of the books that meant so much to me when I was younger just to see how “inappropriate” they could be deemed by adults. I think I will…

The onion isn’t satire. The onion is pure progressive rage with a thin satire coating.

So you’re saying it has layers?

It’s Happening

I had always heard about people having nightmares before their wedding but I certainly didn’t think I would. Of course, now I’ve had about 4 and they are coming with increasing frequency the closer we get to the wedding.

Some gems from last night’s dream:

-Kendra and I got in an elevator to head to our ceremony and only realized once inside that we didn’t do our first look with the photographer and we both basically had no reaction to seeing each other in our dresses for the first time.

-We realized toward the end of the night that we left our bouquets and boutonnieres at home and didn’t have them for the entire ceremony.

-We also realized toward the end of the night that we didn’t take any formal pictures and in fact hadn’t seen our photographers the whole night.

-We got up to our honeymoon suite only to discover two kind sized beds and that someone else had already put their things in the room. Who was the someone else? MY PARENTS. We shared a room with my parents on our wedding night.

Go home, subconscious, you are drunk.

Let children read whatever they want and then talk about it with them. If parents and kids can talk together, we won’t have as much censorship because we won’t have as much fear.
